The LakeDistrict Minibreak
Day 4
It was our last day. Awwwwwww! I know. It's sad.
We didn't want to just go straight home so we decided to see Wray Castle at Low Wray. It looked nice in the pictures on the internet.
When we got there, we found plenty of parking spaces outside. Unfortunately, when we got to the castle entrance, there was a sign that said the castle was closed for refurbishment. So we can't give you our experience of the inside. We were disappointed. However, we made the best of it and decided to have a wander.
We came across a lovely cafe' called, Joey's Cafe' which is close by. It's not you're normal cafe'. It has a warm cosy feel inside. There were a lot of people there, which is often a sign a place is good. We can definitely say it's good and worth going to.
They have a good range of drinks, cakes and hot food. We weren't hungry yet so we just had a drink. We had our favourite hot chocolate and enjoyed our time there.
The castle overlooks lake Windermere. You can walk down to it by following the path down. It's not far and only takes a few minutes. We didn't go down to the lake. We just walked around the outside of the castle.
We set off in the car and decided to go to Ambleside.
The tiniest house
Ambleside is known for the tiny house called, Bridge House. It stands on a stone bridge over the Stock Beck river. It is the smallest property owned by the National Trust. It only has two small rooms, one above the other. It was built in the 17th century and has been used for different purposes over the years.
It has been said that eight people once lived there. When we saw the house, we found this hard to believe. They must have been very tiny people. I wonder if they were gnomes.
Something else worth seeing is across the road from the tiny house. You get a lovely view up the river.
We then walked toward the shops. Ambleside has lots of shops, cafe's and pubs. So there's plenty of choice when you need to eat.
However, be aware the prices are high in Ambleside as it is popular with tourists. We spent a while looking round the shops whilst also looking for somewhere to eat. We came across a place called, Apple Pie Cafe & Bakery. It looked nice and I'm sure the food was too. However, we thought it was too expensive and so we decided to look elsewhere.
Finally, we found a pub which had a cosy atmosphere. The food was homemade and we really enjoyed our meal there. The prices were still high but I guess that's the same with other places in Ambleside.
When we finished our meal, we noticed the time was getting on. So we made our way back to the car and started our journey home.
We absolutely loved our time in this part of the lake district. The views are amazing and there are plenty of places to see. We also recommend the hotel we stayed at if you want to give it a try.
We'll see you on the next trip.
