Seaton Sluice

The beach and river walk

Seaton Sluice is in between Blyth and Whitley Bay. It's a nice place to go with your family and friends. It's also a good place to walk your dog.

There is a lovely walk along the river, a long sandy beach and also some nice places for food.

Parking

There is plenty of parking.

If you're just going on the beach, the closest is a large car park next to the beach. However, it is just a short distance from the river walk. There are toilets and we often see an ice cream van. We have had ice-cream from here, it is absolutely gorgeous. However, you have to pay for parking here.

If you're going on the river walk, the nearest place to park is on a side road just up from the car park on the other side of the road. You can usually park on the side road which goes past a pub called, The Milton Constable. However, don't park on the double yellow lines. This is closer to the river walk.

The River Walk
To the left of The Milton Constable there are steps which take you down to the river. The first thing you see are the boats. They almost look like they came out of a picture postcard. You follow the path ahead which takes you past two houses. The path will take you all the way along the river side.

The river walk is nice and relaxing. The scenery is lovely. The river is surrounded by by plenty of trees. You'll see ducks and there is a heron. We often see the large bird perched somewhere.

If you follow the path to the end, you come to a little wooden bridge. This takes you over to the other side of the river. If you go left (which is what we always do), you can walk up the river on the other side. This takes you back to where you started but on the other side of the river.

To get back across you can follow the path down under the road bridge. You will find a metal bridge. When you cross the bridge, turning left will take you back to the steps near the pub, where you started.

If you turn right, the path takes you past the harbour and to Seaton Sluice beach.

However, if you don't go all the way to the harbour, on your left there are steps which take you up to the main road.

Superb Food
If you walk left along the path next to the main road, you come to a road on your left. Across the road to your right, you'll see a very popular fish and chip shop called, The Harbour View. We've been there often and the fish is delicious.

If you go down the road to your left, there are two pubs that serve superb food called, The Waterford Arms and the Kings Arms. The Waterford Arms is known for it's very large fish. If you order the large fish, it hangs off the edge of your plate. So you better be hungry.

Interesting Sculptures
If you walk to the end of the road, you come to the Kings Arms. On your left, you can go down some steps to the river bank. If you look across, you will see a mermaid sculpture on the opposite bank.

There is another well-known sculpture known as the Seaton Sluice doll. The best way to see it is by going over a bridge to the left of the King's Arms. You will see it hanging from a pipe below you.

There are also more similar sculptures if you walk down the left side of the pub.

In all, this is a lovely place to spend your time. You can either go to the beach, go on the lovely river walk, or do both.
