Northern Ireland

Waterfalls and Lakes

One of the things we definitely wanted to see were the beautiful lakes and waterfalls Ireland is known for.

Now we did eventually find a magnificent waterfall. However, we first had a disappointment.

We did a search on Google and the first result it came up with looked promising. It showed a place called, Glencariff. It mentioned lakes and waterfalls. Naturally, we were excited and put it into the sat nav.

It was a fairly long drive. When we got there, the road led us to a large car park, where we also noticed there was a cafe'. Handy for a drink.

There was a parking meter. Unfortunately, this place was not National Trust. Also, it didn't take into account blue badge holders. So we had to pay. Grrr! So we paid the £5.

We fancied a drink so went over to the cafe'. Surprisingly, we found it shut. Grrr again. However, the toilets were open. At least that's something.

We noticed a path and so we decided to follow it. We were not impressed. We could see a waterfall in the far distance across the valley. Debbie took a picture. But even with her full 50x zoom it still looked small in the frame.

We could see that we would have to walk a very long way if we were going to see anything. So we turned back. As we did, we also noticed other people turning back too.

What an absolute disappointment. It was nothing like Google results made it out to be. This is one of the main reasons we set up this website.

The amazing waterfall

We searched again and decided to go to another place that promised a waterfall. It was a place called, Glenco. It wasn't too far from where we were.

We passed the entrance as the National Trust sign was hidden by tree branches.

This turned out to our fortune as we discovered a lovely cafe' called, The Dairy. We were pleased to see it as by this time we were gasping for some refreshment.

It was spacious inside and lots of people were there. "Must be good", we thought. When are drinks were delivered, we asked the girl about the waterfall. "Oh yes, it's just up the road. You must have passed it", she said.

We found out it was a small diagonal turn off. As we came to the entrance, we saw the sign. It wasn't hid coming back the other way. So we went in. There was a car park but this time no parking meter. Hooray for National Trust.

Day 4

After a short one minute walk, the waterfall was before us. How magnificent it was. Being keen amateur photographers we took a few photos.

We noticed there were steps leading up so we thought there maybe a better view up there. Debbie didn't want the climb so I went on my own.

At the top, I saw another two smaller waterfalls above the large one below. So I took more photos.

If you like waterfalls, this is a must to see.

We wanted to stay longer but unfortunately, time was getting on, so we decided to make our way back to the hotel.
