The Alnwick Gardens

in Alnwick (Surprise!)

This is a day out you'll definitely love.

The gardens are glorious and there is also something very interesting called, The Poison Garden. (You must see that.) There's also other wonderful things to see.

To get there, just put 'The Alnwick Gardens' into your sat nav. There's plenty of parking.

The Poison Garden

The first place we went to was The Poison Garden. We had heard about it and wanted to see it for ourselves.

The gates are kept closed and you are only allowed to enter in small groups. Don't worry though because you are accompanied by a guide.

The man was very knowledgeable and explained each plant, why it is poisonous and what to watch out for. What surprised us was how many of these plants are in the UK. One plant is very common in the Mediterranean area and are common around resorts and hotels. So it's good to know about these.

When we came out, we were very wary about plants.

After that, we needed a drink and a snack. So we went over to the cafe they have there. The drink prices are normal but the snacks are a bit pricey we found. They also have toilets there too which is handy.

The waterfall

After we relaxed, we went up towards the gardens. The first thing you see is a large man-made waterfall (Not the traditional waterfall. More of a cascade.). But be careful, you could get wet standing in front of it. From time to time, water squirts out from three places.

To get to the gardens above, you can either walk up the steps up along the side of the waterfall or up a path which is through a tunnel made of tall plants. It's accessible to wheelchairs too as they have ramps alongside the steps. It's really lovely. We saw a few children enjoying running up and down the plant tunnels.

At the top, you get another view of this magnificent waterfall. There is a fountain that comes on every now and again. But this one doesn't get you wet as it's further away.

The magnificent gardens

When you carry on a little further, you come to the flowers. There are all sorts of different flowers and plants. There are all arranged in rows where you can walk around and see them all. There are thousands of different flowers.

After the garden, we walked back down and got ourselves another drink.

The tree-house

Not far from the cafe', is a large tree-house. It looks awesome. You can follow a path which takes you inside where there is a cafe' and restaurant. We didn't go in but heard the food is very good although the restaurant is expensive.

Out of this world children's play area

Also, if you have children, there is a play area that is really amazing. It's out of this world. It's near the tree-house and is called, Lilidorei.

It's like something from fairyland. There are fairy tale houses, mushrooms and more. You have to pay to go in but your children will love it.

Our opinion

This is definitely a place you want to go to. You'll enjoy it. If you have children, they will too.
